Welcome to Wheels to Learning

Wheels to Learning provides transportation funding for field trips for Windham County, Connecticut public schools traveling to designated non-profit educational and cultural institutions.

About Wheels to Learning

Wheels to Learning is a pilot program serving Windham County, Connecticut K-12 public schools that seeks to understand if providing funding for transportation will increase access to out-of-classroom enriching learning experiences.

The program was launched during the 2018-2019 school year.  Field trip activities ceased due to the pandemic and the program was put on hold from spring 2020 until spring 2022.  The program was relaunched for the 2022-2023 school year. Wheels to Learning has provided over $78,500 of transportation grants benefitting approximately 11,700 students.  These grants were provided to 36 schools for 163 field trips to 11 different educational venues.

The program was launched and funded by The Scripps Family Fund for Education and the Arts and the Newell D. Hale Foundation.  The funders believe that every child should have access to quality educational opportunities and, through Wheels to Learning, seek to address the prohibitive cost of busing which is often an impediment to the enriching experience of school field trips.
